Midcentury style – the austere version

Lately I am very very attracted to midcentury style in architecture and design. It is after Mad Men that I watched and loved that I was influenced? Or it’s just fashion that hit me with its arrow..I don’t know…All I know is that this style is a current trend in my field and I love it!
So, after hexagon post I will show you some examples that I collected when I was working in a project of 60’s style last months(I was that lucky!). This post is more about austere version of midcentury style, I have a more funny version for another post, stay tuned!

So, What’s your opinion about midcentury style, is it just me that I like it?

Sponge factory in Symi, Greece

45-LOS-symi-mbfI keep bumping into this renovation and I didn’t know it was made in Greece! I’m so impressed by Greek architecture lately! 😉
After Nisyros, we go to Symi this time. A Greek island, part of the Dodecanese island chain, very beautiful from what I’ve heard.

In Symi then, there is a new bistro bar and art gallery, LOS (Lobster-Oyster-Sushi). Designed by Yannos Vrousgos and his team Input Creative Studio LOS is a very successful example of modern architecture and design in a traditional building with history.
0-LOS-symi-mbf1-LOS-symi-mbf 3-LOS-symi-mbfLocated in an old sponge factory that was once home of a merchant who made the first sponge diving equipment! The façade of the building was restored keeping the traditional color palette of the island mixing the old and the new with a modern signage and lighting. So it’s implied that many wonders are to be discovered entering the building! The design of LOS references the very interesting island’s history and culture while adding something fresh and contemporary!

In the interior the bar is stealing the show with an installation of copper pipes and light bulbs that mimics the shape of a sponge. A great dynamic is created as it pays homage to the building’s original owner. Sponge is also referred by the bar itself which is also a piece of jewel, made by porous concrete in a freeform shape.

The amazing patterned tile of the floor affects the general color palette, the custom brass tables give something sophisticated and the tapestry of the big seating area reminds us the traditional fabrics. The mural of a diving mask finishes off the dining area with a slight sense of humor and the copper ductwork throughout ties together the overall character of the design.

Undoubtedly, it’s an incredible mix of contemporary and tradition elements creating something really special in the island of Symi!

House in Capri

House_in_Capri_00After a long rainy week here in Athens, I have again a feeling for summer houses and relaxing refuges! That’s a great opportunity for this amazing villa in Capri, summer residence of  architect and designer Matteo Thun.

Overlooking the Marina Piccola and surrounded by a lemon tree garden the outdoor space is magical and the view just breathtaking! And what can I say about the interior..the tiles on the walls are fantastic! Clean, neutral space with some bold touches of colour, the murano chandellier makes the perfect match and the outdoor dinning table is unique!

No more words, let the pictures talk…

Blue tiles like summer!

Made a mano

Made a mano, beautiful tiles

Blue tiles in vintage patterns reminds me of the aegean see! That’s why I have it in my mind with summer feelings, I don’t know.. The truth is that in summer cottages in combination with white, bright wood and some vintage touch give a beautiful result!! The patterns are numerous, from retro style that reminds Portuguese tiles or Instanbul something..to geometric schemes that makes it more modern, you can’t choose really! At least I couldn’t..I would like all of them in my house!

Casa Lola Brasil

Capture1

Casa Lola is a rental property in Trancoso, Brazil, made by New York designer Jan Eleni. Now that the world cup finished we may look at Brasil in another view again. This vacation house completes a fantasy of relaxing in a fishing village where your everyday life is sleeping, swimming, eating fish that you catch on the afternoon and stuff like that!
Eleni and her husband worked with a local architecture/construction firm and renovated an existing cottage creating an open, airy space. The materials that are used highlight the natural environment and the localily. Concrete floors, raw wood and minimal but traditional decoration with some modern elements like photos.
In addition to the main house that they renovated, Eleni also designed a new guest house. This is my favorite!!! You will see why…

Take a shower outside!

c80670e896acb61be7ea6e35e5226c4b

I find all these “bathrooms” just amazing! The idea of taking a shower in the open air reminds me the summers when I was little, where we used to rinse after the sea, outside in the yard. With the garden hose most of the times. These examples have taken this idea one step ahead and created a space very practical but most important relaxing and beautiful!
